Senior/Principal Political Officer

The British Embassy in Amman is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic
individual for the key position of Senior/Principal Political Officer. Responsibilities
include:
 Research, report analytically, and advise on Jordanian internal affairs, including
developments in policy thinking, government, parliament (including legislation), political
organisations, professional associations and civil society;
 Analyse and report on social media trends in Jordan;
 Build and maintain a strong network of contacts in all these areas;
 Design and oversee the Embassy’s political engagement across Jordan, including leading
on official visits;
 Line Management of junior staff in the political section.
Essential for the job:
 Deep and well evidenced understanding of the political/social media scene in Jordan.
 Minimum 3-5 years’ professional experience in a relevant field.
 Self starter with proven analytical and research skills
 Strong networking and team-working skills; ability to interact with people at all levels of
seniority.
 Full working proficiency in English; native Arabic speaker.
 Excellent translation skills between English and Arabic.
 University degree in a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
Job Grading and Conditions:
This position is flexi-graded: B3 (L) to C4 (L). Final job grading and pay will be dependent on
the successful candidate’s skills and experience. An extremely strong candidate will be awarded a
position at C4 with all the responsibilities set out above. If the successful candidate is more
suited to B3, the job spec will be adjusted, with the official visits and line management elements
removed. The job title at B3 will be Senior Political Officer.
The position is full-time, 37 hours a week, with flexible working arrangements depending on
personal circumstances. Start date: as soon as possible. The package includes excellent health

skills through our Learning & Development package. Leave entitlement is 28 days plus 14 public
holidays.
