UNRWA’s Dispute Tribunal
The UNRWA Dispute Tribunal, which is utilized by the Agency as the neutral first instance of
the United nations two-tier formal system of administration of justice. The UNRWA Dispute
Tribunal is established under UNRWA’s Area and International Staff Regulations and Rules
and is competent to hear and pass judgment on an appeal of: (1) an administrative decision
taken by UNRWA Management in respect of a staff member that is alleged to be in noncompliance with the terms of appointment or the contract of employment; or (2) an
administrative decision imposing a disciplinary measure.
The main responsibilities include:
 Providing substantive and technical support to the Registrar, Judges and Legal Officers of
the UNRWA Dispute Tribunal in the adjudication of cases;
 Reviewing parties’ submissions to the Tribunal and identifying potential issues for the
Judges and Legal Officers. Reviewing case files and preparing summaries for the Judges
and Legal Officers of procedural history, facts and legal contentions and identifying

potential legal issues accordingly;
 Drafting statements of facts and Orders for review by Legal Officers;
 Reviewing, verifying and processing Judgments and Orders, ensuring accuracy, editorial
uniformity and conformity to relevant guidelines and requirements. Drafting, editing and
conducting final check for accuracy of a variety of other case-related documentation and
correspondence;
 Providing substantive assistance in the preparation of reports on the work of the Tribunal
to the Commissioner-General and other bodies, as may be mandated;
 Conducting legal research on assigned issues, using existing legal files, jurisprudence
databases and alternative sources (e.g. computer searches using the internet, intranet
and other databases)
 Assisting the Registrar in the overall supervision and guidance of the Administrative
Officer.
Additional information
 The incumbent may be required to work after normal duty hours and during official
holidays as needed.
Conditions of service
Monthly basic salary JD 849.80. Other benefits include monthly Provident Fund contribution
(15% of basic salary paid by the Agency), compulsory medical insurance, 30 days of annual
leave, and dependency allowance (if applicable).
To qualify for this position, you will need:
Education University degree from an accredited educational institution in English or
related discipline.
Work
Experience
At least four years of progressively relevant experience, three of which in
the legal field and preferably in an international public organization.
Thorough understanding of, and experience in, a legal environment.
Language(s) Excellent command of written and spoken English and Arabic with the
main language being English (the main language should be understood to
be the language in which the candidate is best able to work and of which
he/she has a perfect command).
Equivalency
When the minimum requirements are not fully met, the Director of Human Resources may
exceptionally substitute part of the unmet requirements with a combination of relevant
academic qualifications, additional professional training and progressive relevant work
experience.
NB: Work experience alone or formal qualifications with no relevant work experience are not
considered an acceptable combination.
