Communications Officer

Position Title: Communications Officer
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Under the overall supervision of the Project Manager, the Project Officer will be responsible to organize, store and analyze data with attention on security and confidentiality with a strong understanding of databases and data analysis procedure, the post holder ensures that information flows timely and securely to and from the office as well as within.
Major Responsibilities:
Resource Production and Publication
  1. In response to regional, support office and/or global centre requests, research, write and as appropriate, publish stories about successes and needs in World Vision projects.
  2. In response to regional, support office or global centre requests, take, caption, upload and as appropriate, publish photos and videos and successes and needs in World Vision projects.
  3. Regularly pitch story, photo and other resource ideas through the Share Web site.
  4. With the advice of the Syria Crisis Response Communications Director work to coordinate freelancers on resource gathering projects.
  5. Review web content on WVI and ensure Jordan information is correct and updated by providing current news, story, photo and video resources in collaboration with the WVJ Response Manager.
  6. Support production of external Syria response annual report and other key World Vision documents.
  7. Ensure all written, photographic, video, web and other resources produced are done so in alignment with World Vision child protection standards.
  8. Support in WV’s compliance with global branding and corporate identity.
Media Relations and Risk
  1. Support regional and support office media relations initiatives with the guidance from the Syria Crisis Response Communications Director.
  2. Liaise with Jordanian media on Response local events, WV’s work and key humanitarian issues.
  3. Manage media distribution lists/ key media contacts.
  4. Support translation of key documents including press release and speeches to provide information to the local media.
  5. Host local and international journalists in the field and ensure adherence to WV protocols.
  6. Provide social media content to the partnership as required.
  7. Monitor news media coverage of World Vision International and humanitarian issues regarding the Syria Crisis.
  8. Update the wvcentral.org with media hits.
  9. Risk is reported as per WV global protocols and channels.
VIP visitor engagement 
  1. Working with relevant SOs, prepare schedules for VIP (CEOs, celebrities, high profile media personalities, government representatives) visits to the field and ensure appropriate planning (risk mitigation, pre-visits, meetings with external partners, key messages) is done. Inform support services of required administrative support and follow up.
  2. Accompany visits, both fulfilling all comms requirements (writing, photography, video, etc) and ensuring adherence to protocols and risk mitigation.
  3. Report back on visits to WVJ, Syria Crisis Regional Communications Director and visiting office.
Emergency Communications
  1. Ensure familiarity with equipment needed to support an emergency response.
  2. Ensure familiarity with software, protocols and web addresses needed to support an emergency response.
  3. In the event of a scale up to emergency situation, provide support as needed.
Brand protection
  1. Support in monitoring and signing-off on publications and other materials produces containing the World Vision logo to ensure consistency with WVI corporate branding guidelines.
Internal Communications
  1. Communicate internally to WV Jordan staff on key events. Pitch stories to the Communications Director for possible inclusion in Connections/on wvcentral.
Education:
Degree in Journalism or Communication, development communication, social sciences or other related fields
Experience:
At least one year of experience working with an NGO;
At least 1 year of experience in doing communications and media work, preferably with an NGO;
Knowledge & Skills:
  • Excellent creative, organizational and critical thinking skills as well as the ability to work within and across teams and with all levels of staff and stakeholders; resourceful and innovative;
  • Proficiency in the use of technology and software (Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Professional, Google Products);
  • Basic photography skills (able to compose a shot, interest in developing photography skills);
  • Fluent in spoken and written Arabic and English.
  • Willingness to participate in capacity building initiatives, and implement learnings on-the-job
  • Willingness to assume duties and responsibilities in all communications areas, as needed; Pro-active and able to multi-task
  • Proven ability to design effective communication products, lead formulation of communication messages and strategies;
  • Knowledge of technical aspects involved in the production of different public information and education materials;
  • Multimedia skills such as video production, photo management and graphic design
  • Experience or knowledge of copywriting and copyediting
